Total Seats: 150Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is a professional degree comprising of 4½ years of academic duration plus one year Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship. M.D. General Medicine
Total Seats: 08M.D. General Medicine is a 3 year Post Graduate program that trains the PG resident in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide spectrum of acute and chronic diseases in the adult population. The residents at SMMCH & RI are guided by experienced senior faculty to imbibe clinical acumen and requisite skill set to manage any medical condition competently.
M.S. Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Total Seats: 03The department started postgraduate course in 2020 and gives specialty training to three students a year. It conducts daily ANC, GYNAEC & HIGH RISK PREGNANCY OP. It also conducts special clinic for patients with bad obstetric history, repeated abortions, genetic problems & other complications. The department has a fully-fledged LABOUR WARD that is monitored by specialists round the clock. We also conduct cancer screening, adolescent clinic, and endocrinology clinic once in a week.
M.S. Otorhinolaryngology
Total Seats: 02The department of Otorhinolaryngology offers the students who pursue their masters a vision to diagnose and manage a majority of conditions & be able to demonstrate their cognitive skills in the field of Otorhinolaryngology also emphasizing on the basic concepts of research methodology and research work. They will also have a thorough understanding of the subject along with good communication skills and ethical practice.
M.D. Anesthesiology
Total Seats: 04The PG residents will go through a disciplined stream of training in managing all cases in the department of Anaesthesiology which shoulders the responsibility of overall care of patients posted for surgery, undergoing surgery and recovering post-surgery. Relief of Pain is the mainstay but they contribute to a great extent in emergency situations by providing airway and cardiac resuscitation and advanced life support as well.
M.D. Psychiatry

We at the Department of Psychiatry train our PG residents to provide updated and evidence based treatment to all our patients. M.S. Ophthalmology
Total Seats: 01The Department of Opthalmology at SMMCH&RI offers a comprehensive 3 year postgraduate program with learning on the latest medical and surgical techniques with a focus on subspecialty training as well. The course is designed to develop the PG residents’ skills in analysing Ocular Imagery, surgical skills, and help them gain the latest thinking in Opthalmic health, coached by skilled and experienced faculty.
M.D. Community Medicine
Total Seats: 02Community Medicine is a branch of medicine which focuses on teaching the community aspects of healthcare. It involves identification of community health needs of the community and provision of preventive, curative and promotive health services for which the department has two field training centers, Urban Health Training center at Nandhambakkam and Rural Health Training Center at Amarambedu. We at the department of community medicine train out post graduate students through these centers towards the above ideals. Apart from the clinical training in the hospitals, post graduate students are also trained in epidemiological surveys, research methodology, higher levels of statistical analysis, management techniques and involved in the implementation of various National Health programmes.
M.S. General Surgery
Total Seats: 11Treatment of a wide range of illnesses that often necessitate surgery falls within the broad discipline of general surgery. Learning how to assess a patient’s health and decide if surgery is the best course of action is part of the General Surgery department’s training program. Extensive training is provided in pre-operative patient consultation, specialized surgical procedures, and post-operative patient follow-up care to undergraduate and graduate students assigned in our specialty. The department offers a comprehensive MS Orthopaedics postgraduate training programme designed to develop competent, ethical, and skilled orthopaedic surgeons capable of delivering high-quality musculoskeletal care.
Our department provides extensive exposure to trauma, arthroplasty, sports injuries, spine disorders, paediatric orthopaedics, hand surgery, foot and ankle surgery, musculoskeletal infections, and orthopaedic oncology. With a high patient load, residents receive excellent clinical and operative training under experienced faculty.

- Research Training: guided thesis work following ICMR and Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) protocols, covering study design, biostatistics, and scientific writing, culminating in a dissertation as mandated by TNMGRMU.

MD Respiratory Medicine

The Department of Respiratory Medicine is a dedicated clinical, academic, and research unit engaged in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of the complete spectrum of respiratory disorders, ranging from common airway diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to complex conditions including interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, sleep-disordered breathing, pleural diseases, and tuberculosis. The department is supported by advanced diagnostic and interventional pulmonology services, and contributes to national tuberculosis control efforts through its designated TB Cell under the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP). The department offers the MD Respiratory Medicine postgraduate programme and is committed to developing competent, research-oriented pulmonologists through a structured, competency-based curriculum.

The programme emphasizes excellence in clinical care, critical thinking, research methodology, and evidence-based practice while fostering effective communication, professionalism, and lifelong learning. Graduates will be equipped to provide high-quality child healthcare, contribute to research, and uphold the highest standards of medical ethics.
The postgraduate programme is designed in line with NMC guidelines to achieve competencies across all domains that enable the student to perform the professional role as an expert and specialist practising a specialty in the community.
The goal of the postgraduate course, on successful completion, is to mould the individual into a qualified pediatrician who is a specialist doctor with the ability to assess the state of health, promote health, and diagnose as well as manage disease (acute or chronic, emergency or routine) in children of all ages, from newborn to adolescent.
