Academic & Administrative Information
Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital & Research Institute (SMMCHRI) maintains a robust academic and administrative framework aligned with national standards and institutional excellence.
Academic Structure:
SMMCHRI is affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, and its academic programs are recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The college strictly follows the Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum for its MBBS program, which was implemented from the 2019 batch onward as mandated by the NMC.
The postgraduate (MD/MS) programs adhere to the syllabus prescribed by the affiliating university, ensuring uniformity and academic rigor across disciplines such as General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Community Medicine.
Quality Assurance and Curriculum Oversight:
The Medical Education Unit (MEU), established in 2011, plays a central role in curriculum implementation, faculty development, and educational innovation. It functions under the guidance of the NMC Nodal Centre at Sri Ramachandra Medical College, conducting essential programs such as:
- Curriculum Implementation Support Programmes (CISP I & II) for MBBS Phase I and II faculty.
- Revised Basic Course Workshops and AETCOM (Attitudes, Ethics and Communication) training for faculty.
- Regular Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) to update teaching methodologies and assessment practices.
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) ensures continuous monitoring and enhancement of academic standards, promoting research, innovation, and compliance with NMC and university regulations.
Administrative Leadership
Administrative operations are led by key officials who ensure seamless coordination between academic, clinical, and support services:
- Dean: Oversees academic planning, faculty appointments, and institutional development.
- Medical Superintendent: Manages hospital operations, patient care services, and clinical training logistics.
- The Vice Principal: supports the Dean in academic and administrative planning, coordinates educational activities, and ensures discipline and smooth institutional functioning.
- Heads of Departments (HODs): Supervise academic delivery, research activities, and student mentorship within their respective disciplines.
This leadership structure ensures efficient governance, timely execution of academic calendars, and a supportive environment for students and staff.
Integration and Support Systems
SMMCHRI emphasizes interdisciplinary learning and early clinical exposure, as per CBME guidelines. The MEU supports curriculum alignment, integration of foundational and clinical sciences, and development of assessment tools to evaluate student competencies.
Additionally, value-added and add-on courses in areas like Basic Life Support, Pharmacovigilance, and Research Methodology complement the core curriculum, enhancing holistic development without disrupting academic schedules.
In summary, SMMCHRI combines NMC-compliant academic rigor with structured administrative leadership, supported by the MEU and IQAC, to deliver high-quality medical education and patient care in alignment with national standards.
