Anesthesiology

The Department of Anesthesiology at Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital and Research Institute provides comprehensive perioperative care encompassing preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management, and postoperative pain relief. The department plays a pivotal role in all surgical specialties, ensuring patient safety and comfort through modern anesthesia practices. The faculty members are actively involved in teaching, clinical work, research, and simulation- based training.

Details of the Curriculum for UG Program

The undergraduate (MBBS) anesthesia curriculum focuses on imparting basic knowledge of anesthesia, resuscitation, and critical care. Students are trained in airway management, basic life support (BLS), preoperative evaluation, and principles of anesthesia through lectures, demonstrations, and clinical postings. Hands-on exposure is given during their clinical postings in the operating rooms and intensive care units.

Details Of The PG Program

The department offers MD in Anesthesiology under The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.

Duration: 3 years

Number of admissions per year: 4 (Four)

The postgraduate training covers all aspects of anesthesiology including general, regional, cardiac, neuro, pediatric, obstetric, and critical care anesthesia. PGs are involved in patient care, academic discussions, journal clubs, research activities, and teaching undergraduate students. Each postgraduate undertakes a university-approved thesis project as part of their academic curriculum.

Facilities Available And Clinical Services Provided

17 modular operation theatres equipped with advanced anesthesia workstations and multiparameter monitors

Pre-anesthetic evaluation clinic functioning daily

Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) for immediate postoperative monitoring

24-hour Intensive Care Unit (ICU) managed by the department

Pain management services for acute and chronic pain .Anesthesia services for emergency and trauma resuscitation (Casualty, ER, ICU) Provision of anesthesia services for MRI, CT, and other non-OR locations.

Publications By The Department

The faculty and postgraduates of the Department of Anesthesiology are actively involved in research and publication.

All faculty members have published original research papers, case reports, and review articles in national and international indexed journals in accordance with National Medical Commission (NMC) norms.

Recent publications include studies on airway management, regional anesthesia techniques, perioperative monitoring, and critical care practices

Each postgraduate student completes one university-approved thesis/dissertation as part of their MD program and is encouraged to present and publish their work in scientific journals and conferences.
