General surgery is one of the core clinical departments of primary surgical speciality in Sri Muthukumaran medical college, hospital & research institute since its inception, dealing with illnesses related to the skin, breast, thyroid, soft tissue, wound/ulcer care, diabetic foot management including salvage surgeries to save the toes and feet as well as limbs, vascular diseases, trauma, abscess, hernias, abdominal conditions associated with oesophagus, stomach, bowel, liver, gall bladder, appendix etc which require interventional (Operative) or conservative management (Non-Operative) by a surgical specialist including minimally invasive procedures like Laparoscopic Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy etc.

About The Department

The GENERAL SURGERY Department is a post-graduate teaching institute affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, with a strong vision of academic excellence, research advancement, and quality patient care. Undergraduate and postgraduate students are given hands- on training to manage both routine and complicated surgical cases confidently in their professional careers.

The Department has five units which provide out-patient services, elective and emergency surgical services. The General surgical OPD functions six days a week. Five units- each in charge of a particular day of the week. Saturday / Sunday admitting units will be on rotation.

About 150 patients are seen every day in the OPD and emergency services and admissions are made during both times when warranted. There are 3 Male surgical wards (75 beds), 3 female surgical wards (75 beds), special burns wards separately for males and females, a post-operative ward, surgical intensive care unit and a dedicated trauma / casualty ward.

On admission days, the admitting unit will oversee OP, Admissions, Emergency cases while the other units will be occupied with the operation theatre cases, ward rounds, dressing, review cases and academic works as assigned.

he Duty assistant Surgeon (DAS) will be responsible for all surgical inpatient and outpatient care, casualty (Surgical / Trauma), Emergency operative cases, Surgical ward calls from other departments from end of OP at 3:00 pm on admitting day to next day 8:00 am.

Surgical Specialities

  • Plastic surgeon is available 6 days a week except on Sundays.
  • Urologist is available 5 days a week for OP and theatre where procedures like urethroscopy, TURP etc are performed.
  • The surgical gastroenterologist is available 3 days a week for consultation and procedures like diagnostic & therapeutic upper / lower GI endoscopies.
  • Surgical oncologist is available 3 days a week.
  • Neurosurgeon is available 6 days a week except on Sundays.

All elective / emergency superspeciality procedures are being carried out in our hospital by the respective superspeciality surgeons.

Details Of The Curriculum For UG

The curriculum for undergraduates (UG) is followed as per NMC norms and includes theory classes, seminars, small group discussions, self-directed learning, clinical postings, and skills lab teaching. Students undergo periodic formative and summative assessments.

Clinical posting: 2nd MBBS (CBME Phase II) 150 students divided into 3 batches of 50 students each posted for a period of 4 weeks per batch on rotation. 5 units, 10 students per unit. As per timetable theory classes are covered in the form of lectures (Standalone / Integrated) for 2nd MBBS and early clinical exposure lectures along with nesting of topics for Ist MBBS.

Details Of The PG Program

The department offers comprehensive postgraduate training in General surgery leading to M.S (GENERAL SURGERY) degree.

The department has an annual intake of 11 students as per NMC guidelines, with admission based on NEET-PG. The course duration is three years, during which students receive:
  • Clinical training in managing normal and high-risk surgical cases including elective and emergency management.
  • Exposure to all elective and emergency surgeries
  • Hands-on operative training in laparoscopy and open surgeries.
  • Active participation in seminars, journal clubs, case discussions, interdepartmental meetings,clinical society meetings,continued medical educations,quiz programmes.
  • Research methodology training with mandatory dissertation work
  • Participation and presentation in regional and national conferences
